and the loved ones in their care.

* Learn how to protect themselves and their loved one from infection

* Learn how to be prepared for emergencies

Family Caregiving: General Caregiving Skills

To prepare individuals who are family caregivers to measure their loved one’s vital signs such as pulse, respirations and body temperature and how to assist with medications.

* Learn how to take a person’s temperature, pulse and respirations

* Learn the importance of giving medication properly

Family Caregiving: Positioning and Helping Your Loved One Move

 To prepare individuals who are family caregivers to safely position and help their loved one move

* Learn how to apply the principles of good body mechanics

* Learn the importance of repositioning a loved one who spends a lot of time in bed

* Learn how to prevent pressure ulcers

* Learn how to safely help their loved one move

Family Caregiving: Assisting with Personal Care

To prepare individuals who are family caregivers to assist their loved one

with personal care such as bathing, grooming and using the toilet, and

to recognize the importance of personal care and know when personal care is needed.

* Learn the caregiving techniques for:

 - Assisting a loved one with mouth care

 - Assisting a loved one with grooming

 - Assisting a loved one with dressing and undressing

 - Assisting a loved one with bathing and shampooing

 - Assisting a loved one with toileting

Family Caregiving: Healthy Eating

 To prepare individuals who are family caregivers about good nutrition and how to help their loved one eat.
* Learn healthy eating is important for people of all ages
* Learn basic nutrition
* Learn to help feed a loved one, if necessary

Family Caregiving: Caring for the Caregiver

 To prepare individuals who are family caregivers to care for his or her own health while caring for a loved one.

* Learn to recognize the signs of caregiver stress

* Learn ways to make time for himself or herself

* Learn how to access help from community organizations such as respite care

Family Caregiving: Legal and Financial Issues

To inform caregivers about legal and financial issues that affect them and the loved one for whom they care.

* Learn the legal issues surrounding caring for someone and planning his or her health care

* Learn about financial issues such as insurance information and budgeting

Family Caregiving: Caring for a Loved one with Alzheimer’s Disease or Dementia

 To inform caregivers how to care for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia as well as 

  to handle common behaviors associated with the disease.

* Learn how to deal with the common behaviors associated with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia

* Learn how to provide for a person with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia including daily activities 

   such as bathing and eating

* Learn to recognize the signs of depression and understand that a person who cares for someone 

   with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia is at risk for depression

Family Caregiving: Caring for a Loved one with HIV/AIDS

 To prepare individuals who are family caregivers to care for a loved one with HIV/AIDS, 

  including the symptoms that may occur and how to provide emotional support.

* Learn the symptoms and know how to care for a loved one with HIV/AIDS

* Learn the facts about HIV and AIDS

* Learn caregiving techniques to help care for a person with HIV/AIDS

* Learn the risks of infection for a person with HIV/AIDS and know how to reduce those risks

* Learn the importance of using Universal Precautions when caring for a person with HIV/AIDS

Course length: Each segment is approximately 1 hour.
